Lcbo has done it, they've lowered the prices on Knob Creek 12 and Knob creek Rye to a much more acceptable price.
Within the beginning of 2024 alone, Ontario is seeing massive price hikes within scotch. Notably, Glenfarclas 15 increasing from $109.50 to $175.40 and Glenfarclas 25 increasing from roughly $340 to $500.40.
Any lovers of Irish whisky living in Ontario will be disappointed with the price increases in this category. Redbreast 12 Cask strength has gone up about $38. Yellow spot is approaching $150 up $18. This and other great tasting Irish whiskies now jumping significantly in price compared to before. A shame, as great tasting Irish whisky represented an amazing value just a year or two ago but now is approaching scotch prices.
Price decreases
Knob creek 12 - $149.95 -> $105.05
Knob creek Rye - $61.95 -> $48.00
What this means
I think this is a good sign for whisky in Ontario. It means that while the trend is for prices to rise over time, the LCBO isn't allergic to decreasing prices on certain whiskies if they aren't selling. Knob creek 12 at $150 is completely insulting given that it's available for closer to our neighbour in the states for closer to $95.06 CAD. Voting with our wallets has never been more important. I believe that LCBO will seriously start to look at price decreases for whiskies that aren't selling at their given price points and test to see if Ontario will bite at reasonably reduced whisky prices.
